As a senior without family, I found the Pandemic to be horrific but eye-opening. Without a computer and the skill to use it I was unable to access available help, up to date information, basic needs. The news networks and local agencies tried to help but always, always referred the viewer to a website for more information. I wish them well and I thank them for their service, but it was not enough. I felt isolated, fearful, and forgotten.
True protective isolation was impossible unless you could research, download, create and attach documents, place orders, sync devices, Zoom or Skype. The best illustration I can give of the technical complexity required to replace human contact is the renewal of a driver’s license. Look it up. I dare you.
I am a college graduate, but I could not learn without the right help.
Mid-State Literacy provided a tutor who gave me peace of mind. I thought I was too old to learn. I have low vision. I cannot type! We started slowly. My tutor listened and customized my lessons to my needs and interests. I gained confidence and lost my fear.
Now I can research on-line and make good financial choices. Because I understand my phone I can use Uber for an emergency. My health care providers can text, email and zoom virtual appointments. I can complete application forms, print them off for neighbors. I am learning to keep a journal using Word.
God forbid we have another Pandemic, but if we do, I might just draft the All-American novel! Thank you, Mid-State Literacy!
