Why do we have a Bookfair?

Mid-State Literacy Council (MSLC) is a community funded nonprofit organization based in State College, PA created in 1971 to bring literacy in all forms to adults in Centre and Clearfield Counties.

MSLC offers classes, one-to-one tutoring, and workshops to English Language Learners (ESL), and adults working to improve reading, writing, math, technology, and communication skills to access employment, healthcare, and life goals.

  • 11% of Centre County’s population struggles with limited literacy. This affects an individual’s ability to navigate employment, public services, healthcare systems and online resources, or to understand prescription labels, legal documents, tax forms etc.
  • With 200+ volunteer tutors and teachers, MSLC empowers 300+ adults each year with accessible, affordable education. Gaining literacy for life skills supports entire families.
  • Mid-State Literacy Council receives no government funding. We operate on a budget funded by community donations and tuition revenue from students who are able to pay.
  • MSLC’s Barnes and Noble Bookfair raises funds to: 1) train and support local volunteers, 2) purchase instructional materials for adult students, 3) prepare adults earning their GED or TOEFL, 4) instruct seniors learning digital skills, 5) support New Americans and refugees learning English, and more!
